New initiative launched to foster online learning

Leading US colleges are among 100 educational establishments worldwide which are spearheading a new initiative to promote online courses, confirming the growth of education online.

Among the US faculties in the consortium are John Hopkins, Tufts, Notre Dame and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which has made all of its courses available for free and is getting over one million hits per month on its OpenCourseWare website, allheadlinenews.com reports. Those undertaking the MIT programmes do not, however, get a degree for completing the course, but for an average outlay of $20,000, the classes are considerably cheaper than taking the same programme on campus.

News of the consortium comes after Yale announced it is to allow content from seven of its most popular courses available online. Data from the Sloan Consortium indicates that around 3.5 million US students are currently taking an online course - equivalent to 20 percent of the total college population.
