Airlines to test in-flight internet

During the coming months a range of American airlines will test the use of in-flight internet, it has been reported.

Among the airlines involved are JetBlue, American Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines. Free email and instant messaging services are to be offered by JetBlue on a trial basis on one of its planes starting Tuesday of next week.

Henry Harteveldt, an analyst with Forrester Research, told the NY Times: "I think 2008 is the year when we will finally start to see in-flight internet access become available, but I suspect the rollout domestically will take place in a very measured way. "In a few years time, if you get on a flight that doesn't have internet access, it will be like walking into a hotel room that doesn't have TV."

Virgin America, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines are set to offer an in-flight internet service which will cost $10 per flight.
