PayPal and eBay phishing drops
The number of phishing emails directed at users of eBay and PayPal has dropped off substantially, a security firm has found.
A year ago approximately 85 percent of phishing emails pretended to be from one of the two companies, but in September of this year only 21 percent did, according to Sophos. Now cyber criminals are widening their nets in an attempt to draw more internet users into their scams.Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said: "In September 2006, almost nine out of ten phishing emails were trying to steal information from unwary eBay/PayPal customers, now it's more like one in five. "That's an impressive turnaround by anyone's standards."
Now users of PayPal and eBay are not as prone to be targeted by cyber criminals, added Mr Cluley. On October 3rd 2002 eBay purchased PayPal, which was already the favored payment vehicle of choice for over half the users of the internet auction house.
